Slawomir Kulpowicz, pianist/keyboardist and producer for Shaila Music/Mantram Records, has been likened to a modern day Chopin. A musical prodigy, Slawic has expressed his artistry in many forms, from classical composition and performance to jazz to world music to multimedia compositions. A prolific and award-winning artist, his works have been adapted to many media including live performance, music for ballet, theater, a number of recordings, television, film, and both radio and television commercials. Slawic has performed on three continents, Europe, Asia and America. His profound creativity has driven him in many directions, not the least of which is his fascination with the music of John Coltrane, and later to his meeting with Alice Coltrane, out of which his work with Radha Botofasina and Shaila Music/Mantram Records were born.
In 1974 he completed his studies at the Academy of Music in Katowice, the home of some of Poland's most recognized contemporary composers, including Gorecki. However, it was not pianists like himself, but John Coltrane and the music of his new quartet which galvanized Slawic. His Master's thesis was entitled the "Art of John Coltrane."
In 1976, he joined the quartet of renowned alto sax player Zbignew Namyslowski. Thus began his international exposure as a pianist which took him from a 60 city tour of the former USSR to clubs and festivals throughout Europe and the US and numerous albums.
Slawic was honored to perform as a piano soloist at the John Coltrane Music Festival in Los Angeles on two occasions.
A 1978 appearance at the "Jazz Yatra Festival" in India had a profound and life altering effect on Kulpowicz. Since then, he has visited India several times on a musical and spiritual quest. He has paired with Indian sitar master Shujaat Khan and with Turkish master musician Burhan Ocal. This turn Eastward and Inward created an urge to express his spiritual yearnings through his work. His desire lead him to meet musical master Alice Coltrane and culminated in a spiritual jazz album "Samarpan Songs" which sold over 100,000 copies in Poland.
From the mid eighties computer technology captured Slawic's imagination. Since then, he has used this technology to create a truly original sound. He has brought this new approach to film scores, stage productions, commercials, and television programs earning him repeated recognition including highest honors for music in Polish TV commercials in the past year.
Prolific, profound and passionate, Slawic has brought his enormous talents to his latest and most ambitious project, the launch of Shaila Music/Mantram Records, a label which he and Radha Botofasina founded with the release of "Mantram." The duo have produced and assembled five initial releases which represent a broad spectrum of work and the culmination of their combined artistic creativity. |
